GH: Talk us through your professional experience in the disability, corporate and support spheres.

SH: After two years working as a support worker in aged care, I was inspired to create a lasting impact on people’s lives. This led me to the disability sector, where I worked in various group homes in England, supporting individuals with physical disabilities and behavioural needs, and proudly serving as the house ‘dignity champion’.

In 2014, I moved to Australia and spent 18 months as a full-time support worker for a domestic violence survivor who had an acquired brain injury. I began my corporate journey as a rostering coordinator and intake officer before transitioning into the role of National Business Development Manager, supporting 8-14 individuals across Australia.

GH: Tell us a bit more about your core skills and competencies.

SH: My superpower is the ability to build and nurture strong relationships. This is at the heart of everything I do, whether with internal or external stakeholders. Build trust and respect, and you’ll receive it back. I am skilled in creating and redesigning processes and best practice standards while ensuring our clients remain at the centre of everything we do.

After two years of professional hairdressing, I realised this was not my life’s purpose. My journey evolved at age 18 with a degree in Health and Social Care. I then completed multiple leadership and trainee courses to enhance my theoretical knowledge. I’m always seeking women’s leadership courses and networks, and love attending disability conferences, such as the annual ABI Conference. It’s important for me to stay engaged in the market through various avenues.

GH: Any goals and accomplishments you would like to share?

SH: I’ve been lucky to achieve many significant accomplishments through a team approach; however, it’s often the small things that make a person’s life that bit easier. I’ll never hesitate to make a phone call to ensure that a person in a position of vulnerability is heard. I always challenge assumptions and ask questions to ensure better outcomes.

My goal is to work alongside everyone at Good Housing to create better experiences for our tenants and to be a leading provider in the space. I’m excited about our future, and with tenant and external stakeholder feedback, I’m confident we will be that leading SDA provider. I am passionate about changing the narrative of what an SDA provider is capable of and proving that it can be more than just ‘bricks and mortar.’

GH: Tell us about your hobbies and interests (outside of work, of course!).

SH: When I’m not working, you’ll find me with my 3-year-old daughter and my husband. My best days are spent with family, and if we can venture to beautiful wineries to try some of Australia’s wine, I’m a happy woman! “Me time” is spending time with friends, as being around others fills my cup. Otherwise, I’m at the gym, which I need to counteract food and wine! I also love to sing—not professionally, but for my own mental health.

GH: Last but not least, what do you love most about working with Good Housing?

SH: Our purpose and mission are the key selling points for me. It’s beautiful to see the dedication each team member has towards achieving quality outcomes. Ensuring our tenants are at the heart of everything we do is paramount to our success!
